Botox Aftercare Rules: 7 Things to Avoid for 24 Hours Post-Treatment
You’re maybe fifteen minutes out from your Botox appointment, sitting in your car, and now you’re trying to remember everything the nurse just told you.
The rules here are simple. There aren’t many of them. Ignore one anyway and you could end up with worse bruising than you needed, or results that don’t sit quite right.
1. Don’t Lie Down for the First Few Hours
This is the big one. For about four hours after treatment, stay upright. No napping, no lying on the couch to watch TV, no bending over to tie your shoes for an extended stretch.
The reasoning behind it is simple: lying flat lets gravity pull the product in directions it wasn’t meant to go. Nobody’s asking you to freeze in place for hours. Just keep your head up, higher than your heart, for a little while and you’ve done your part.
2. Keep Your Hands Off Your Face
For the next 24 hours, hands stay off the treated spots. No rubbing, no pressing, no massaging, even by accident. That means catching yourself before you rest your chin on your hand at your desk, or before you rub your forehead mid-phone call without thinking about it.
Normal facial expressions are fine. Smiling, talking, frowning at a bad email, all of that is okay. It’s direct pressure and rubbing you want to avoid.
3. Skip the Gym
Heavy exercise, hot yoga, heavy lifting, anything that spikes your heart rate and blood pressure, save it for tomorrow. Elevated blood flow can increase swelling and make you more prone to bruising at the injection sites.
A short walk is fine. Sprinting up stairs or hitting a spin class is not the move today.
4. Stay Away From Saunas, Hot Tubs, and Steam Rooms
Heat is the problem here. It widens your blood vessels and sends more blood flowing to your face than usual, and more blood flow means more swelling and more bruising. A blazing hot shower falls into that category too, so dial it down to lukewarm for just one day.
5. Put the Drink Down
Alcohol thins your blood. Thinner blood means more bruising if you do end up with any bruising at the injection sites. Have a drink tomorrow if you want one.
6. Be Gentle With Your Skincare Routine
You can wash your face. Use a mild cleanser, lukewarm water, your normal routine minus anything aggressive. Skip exfoliating brushes, scrubs, or anything that involves actively working over the treated areas. Your skin doesn’t need extra stimulation right now.
7. Hold Off on Makeup Over the Injection Sites
For at least a few hours, ideally closer to the full 24 if your skin tends to be reactive, skip makeup directly over where you were injected. Applying product means touching and pressing on the area, which brings us right back to rule number two.
What Happens Next
After that first day passes, life mostly goes back to normal. Plenty of people head to work or run their usual errands the same afternoon. Whatever redness or puffiness shows up right at the injection points tends to fade within hours anyway. Some people bruise. Most don’t.
Here’s the part people forget to plan for: Botox doesn’t work instantly. You’ll start noticing your lines softening around day three to five. The full result doesn’t show up until around day fourteen. If you’re judging your results a few days after treatment and thinking it didn’t work, give it the full two weeks before deciding anything.
The Short Version
Stay upright for a few hours. Don’t touch your face. Skip the gym if need be, the sauna, and the alcohol for a day. Be gentle with skincare and makeup. Then just wait for it to kick in.
None of this requires rearranging your week. It’s one day of minor adjustments in exchange for results that actually hold the way they’re supposed to.
Something feels off, or it’s been over a day and the swelling or pain hasn’t backed down. That’s not a situation to just sit with and hope it passes.
