WHAT LIP FILLER CAN AND CAN'T DO
Lip filler can add meaningful volume to lips that are thin, either naturally or from age. It can restore balance between an upper lip that’s significantly thinner than the lower. It can define a border that’s become soft or undefined. It can lift a flat cupid’s bow, add projection to a lip that sits inward, and reduce the appearance of fine lines above and around the mouth. These are real changes that patients can see clearly.
What it doesn’t do: it can’t restructure fundamental lip anatomy beyond what the tissue will support. A very thin upper lip can be improved considerably—but there’s a ceiling on how much before the result stops looking like a lip and starts looking like something else. That ceiling is different for every patient and part of what an assessment establishes before treatment begins.
The other variable worth naming: volume is only part of what determines the outcome. Placement matters just as much. Where the filler goes, in which layers, in what distribution across the lip—that determines whether the result looks like the patient’s own lips or like something that was added on top of them. WHAT TO EXPECT
A few days before: skip blood thinners if you can manage it. Aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, alcohol. The lips bruise more easily than other areas of the face and this step genuinely reduces how much bruising happens afterward.
The appointment itself is quick. Numbing cream goes on, sits for a few minutes, and then treatment begins. Most patients are done and out in under 30 minutes.
Afterward: expect swelling. It’s normal and temporary, but it can make the lips look more voluminous than the final result for the first several days. Some bruising is possible, particularly along the injection sites. Both resolve within a week in most cases. Avoid heat, intense exercise, and anything that significantly increases circulation to the face for the first 24 to 48 hours.
Two weeks out is when the actual result is visible. The swelling is gone. The filler has settled. What you see at two weeks is what you got.

Does it hurt? With numbing cream, significantly less than most people expect. The lips are sensitive and some discomfort during injection is normal—pressure, mild pinching along the border—but severe pain isn’t typical. The actual injection time is short. How much filler do I actually need? Depends on your starting point and your goal. First-time patients looking for subtle enhancement often start with half a syringe. Patients with more significant volume loss or more defined goals may need a full syringe or more. The right amount gets determined in person by looking at the lips—not by a formula applied in advance.
Will it look fake? Overdone results come from too much product or poor placement. Starting with less and building from there is the approach that consistently produces results people can’t identify as filler. You can add volume at a follow-up if you want more. You can’t walk back the same day.
Can it be undone? Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler dissolves with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. If the result isn’t right—too much volume, asymmetry, or simply not what you had in mind—it can be addressed. This reversibility is one of the main advantages of HA filler over permanent options.
